About the Program

Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2021

To build stronger civic partnerships and increase awareness of library services in the community, the Shenandoah Branch Library began collaborating with Shenandoah Park?in?June 2017. As a result,?library day?was incorporated into the park's popular summer camp program. Approximately 100 campers visit the Shenandoah library during the eight-week camp. The library staff's mission is to:? Go beyond the traditional library field trip and break the stereotype of libraries by offering a lively and interactive learning space.?? Promote library resources and ensure every camper receives a library card.??? Instruct campers on the use of public libraries?using?orientations and hands-on activities.???? Instill a sense of inclusion, community, and camaraderie by having the campers work together.?? Introduce campers to other community members through programs conducted by special guests.??? Provide a creative outlet with craft activities.?? The Shenandoah Library Camp Kids Program expanded to include an additional group from Allegria Learning & Arts Academy. This new group increased the program schedule from?one?to four days a week for eight consecutive weeks.?It has also brought about the unintended but positive consequence of extending the program beyond Shenandoah Park's summer camp and made it a part of their afterschool schedule.??
