The?Miami-Dade Public Library System Senior Social Club?at the Homestead Branch?is a program that combats social isolation and loneliness in seniors. The club began in August 2019 at the Homestead Branch Library to bring older adults together. It is free of charge and welcomes all seniors. The program allows for seniors to gather, socialize, and connect with members of the community in a fun, safe, and educational manner. The weekly club activities revolve around conversation, games, books, arts and crafts,?and informational sessions on the library’s many resources and services. A highlight of the program is the community guest speaker series. The key component of the club is that members take part in the development of the program,?which gives them a sense of purpose. This keeps the club relevant and interesting to its members. For example, many have requested to have time allotted for conversation. This went exceptionally well because it gave them the opportunity to reconnect socially. They share their life stories, and experiences they had in the workplace. The program’s goal is to increase its membership attendance, and to engage seniors in activities that keep them socially healthy and?reduces?isolation and loneliness.?
