Year: 2013

The collaborative program, the Rubber Ducky Reading Club that ran from September 4 to December 6 2012, originated as a project between Augusta County Preschools, Quality Childcare Initiative and the Augusta County Library. The purpose was to increase parent/child (ages 0 – 5) involvement in the library and in reading while improving early literacy skills. Participating families were given suggestions on how to use early literacy techniques while reading to their child. A reading log was designed with twelve activities paired with twelve literacy milestones. Parents and children were encouraged to perform one activity daily and then color the corresponding duck picture to show completion. After all twelve ducks were colored; the child could bring the reading log to the library and get a rubber ducky as a reward for participating. Children were encouraged to pick up another reading log and continue collecting as many ducks as possible.
