In 2017, the Baltimore County Department of Aging embarked on a six-month social media and educational campaign to raise awareness of ageism, promote aging in a positive manner and educate individuals on ways to live a longer and healthier life. The initiative was called “Reimagine Aging” and used the hashtag #ReimagineAging2017. Between May through October, the agency initiated conversation about aging stereotypes through the following efforts: a social media campaign on Instagram and Face Book; professional conferences; a “Reimagine Aging” feature area at the Department’s annual Power of Age Expo; senior center programs and events; intergenerational programs; and highlighting seniors who were role models for how to age positively. As a result of this initiative, between May and October, 4,889 individuals participated in 152 intergenerational programs, 774 people participated in 79 video learning programs, 4,849 individuals attended 591 health screenings, 4,234 individuals attended 367 health education classes, 92 essays and poems were submitted to the writing contest, 600 people discussed ageism and aging issues at the EXPO, 225 professionals attended the professional conference in May, 880 engagements occurred on Instagram from 216 posts, and there was a total daily reach on Facebook of 82,760 between May to October.
