Read with Me is a program that focuses on improving rates of young children by promoting reading in households countywide. The program is overseen by Read 20, the County Mayor’s initiative for reading and education in the county. Read 20 also administers other programs such as a Read Mobile and a Recognition Program. Reading twenty minutes a day has many proven benefits for children such as helping to develop the child’s vocabulary, stimulating the child’s curiosity, and helping with the child’s overall language mastery. Read 20 seeks to improve reading and thereby scholastic achievement in Hamilton County. Read with Me partners with a local radio station to provide on-air reading for 20 minutes once a week. The intent is to help promote household reading with the aim of getting all children reading at or above grade-level by the end of the 3rd grade. Reading over the radio is part of Read 20’s strategic plan for promoting reading with infants and young children. Read with Me meets this goal by getting on the local airways and reading, which serves as an example and motivates parents to either read to their children or have their children listen to the program.
