According to the Humane Society of the United States, more than 92,000 animals are euthanized in Louisiana animal shelters. Historically, Caddo Parish euthanizes between 80-85 percent of the 10,000 animals that enter the Parish operated shelter annually. Many of these animals are euthanized simply due to a lack of homes opportunities. In 2009, Caddo Parish made a concerted effort to bring the reality and benefits of responsible pet ownership to the community. For three weeks in September, Caddo Parish Animal Services and the State Fair of Louisiana teamed up by hosting pet adoption events for the three week duration of the State Fair. More than 50 dogs and cats found loving, caring and appropriate homes during that time. More importantly, countless individuals were exposed to the county shelter, their animals and their mission. The State Fair of Louisiana was only one example of Caddo Parish Animal Services teaming up with a community business or organization to promote pet adoption and host off-site events. In all, Caddo Parish Animal Services adopted 1,633 animals in 2009. This correlates to more than a 60 percent increase in only one year. These constant and progressive efforts also yielded a 13 percent reduction in the euthanasia rate for Caddo Parish.
