Year: 2012

In response to an increasing need for children's literacy education, the Gloucester County Library System initiated the "PAWS for Reading" program at the Mullica Hill Branch. The library, in conjunction with the non-profit organization, PAWS (Pet-Assisted Visitation Volunteer Services) provides a twice weekly program for young and reluctant readers. This program allows children to read aloud to a therapy dog to improve reading and communication skills. The presence of a dog enables the children to relax and enjoy reading. Furthermore, this program improves the literacy skills of young and struggling readers by giving them a positive reading experience. The children who participate in the "PAWS for Reading" program gain confidence in their reading skills and develop an appreciation of reading. This innovative program has been very successful at the library, and has provided a safe and friendly learning environment.
