Wilson County Department of Social Services (WCDSS) is has launched a number of initiatives committed to utilizing technology to fulfill their mission of serving residents by promoting safety, self-determination and self-sufficiency for families, children and adults in a professional, caring manner. The desire to enable their staff members to work more efficiently inspired their agency to implement a plan to transition from a paper-based organization to a paperless agency. The purpose of the project was to move from a physical file room record keeping system to an electronic model that would provide a quicker, more resourceful way for staff members to view, share and update records. Relying on technology for case file storage results in cost savings from the reduction in paper and mailing expenses, and also translates to more efficient, better quality customer service. Staff members are able to retrieve information without requiring the customer to repeat their case more than once. This new and innovative program has not only saved the county money, but it has also increased efficiency, having a positive effect on both staff and community morale.
