For the first time in its history, the Los Angeles County Annual Report went digital in 2012. Traditionally, the report had been printed and physically distributed, but due to rising costs and a desire to broaden its reach, a new distribution medium was selected. LA County wanted to more effectively communicate our message and engage the public, and thus we knew that a substantial change would have to occur. In issuing the report electronically, we hoped to reach far more of the County’s 10.5 million residents. In previous years, the printed paper report reached just a few thousand citizens – a symptom of high printing costs and difficult distribution. Those few thousand copies were a fraction of what was needed to reach our own 101,000 employees, let alone a potential audience of millions of County residents. By utilizing the newest technologies in web design and social media, we were able to create a website that more effectively communicated the work done by the County and allowed the public to engage, share, and contribute to the discussions around the County of Los Angeles.
