About the Program

Category: Health (Best in Category)

Year: 2010

The Medical Observation Treatment unit was conceived in an effort to decompress hospital emergency rooms of medical cases for treating inebriation. MOTU is a twenty-four hour, seven day per week, 12-bed, medically monitored emergency medical triage unit used to aid detoxification from drugs and alcohol. It is a new component of the Metropolitan Assessment Treatment Services facility operated by the Bernalillo County Department of Substance Abuse Programs. MOTU will allow an additional 350 clients a month to receive medically based triage, stabilization, and referral to an appropriate level of care to continue their detoxification. Those who require a lower level of care during detox will be referred to the MAS Detox which provides clinically managed/social model inpatient alcohol and chemical dependency detoxification; those who need a higher level of care during detox will be referred to the state of New Mexico Department of Health’s Turquoise Lodge which provides medically managed and monitored inpatient chemical dependency detoxification and rehabilitative treatment.
