Among the challenges facing Chesterfield County government this year was providing excellent service to the residents while protecting the county workforce during the Coronavirus pandemic. Immediately upon the lockdown declaration in March of 2020 Chesterfield was challenged to equip the workforce to provide services remotely, via telework. Part of the strategy to overcome this challenge included replacing any non-mobile or desktop computer for any employee whose job allowed them to work remotely, and to enable certain conference rooms and work rooms to allow for more productive hybrid meetings between remote and in-person employees. To enable the workforce to continue to serve the citizens during the pandemic, Chesterfield deployed over 1,200 mobile computers and 1,000 telework kits. Staff leased a warehouse, created a distribution center, procured, and distributed the hardware, and created a state-of-the-art deployment process designed to keep employees safe during the equipment rollout. The county also enabled strategic conference rooms across the campus with cameras and audio to support hybrid meetings with teleworkers and in-office personnel, connecting these rooms to Microsoft Teams.
