Miami International Airport (MIA) is the largest U.S. gateway for Latin America and the Caribbean and is one of the leading international passenger and freight airports in the world. Located on 3,230 acres of land near downtown Miami, MIA’s terminal is being expanded to more than seven million square feet through a capital improvement program scheduled for completion in the winter of 2011. MIA and the General Aviation Airports’ annual economic impact is $26.7 billion. MIA and related aviation industries contribute 282,043 jobs directly and indirectly to the local economy. Among U.S. Airports, MIA ranks first in international freight, second in international passengers, and third in total freight and cargo. The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), the primary law enforcement agency responsible for security at the facility, was deficient in the area of analytical crime mapping for incidents occurring within the MIA campus. MDPD was seeking a viable, intuitive technical solution that would provide superior visualization of all criminal activity transpiring in MIA campus structures. Additionally, any solution must take into consideration the high volume of architectural and structural change occurring at MIA because of the ongoing capital improvement plan. As a result, a project team was formulated to address these weaknesses. The team was tasked with delivering a cost-effective, technical solution that would provide a comprehensive range of analytical mapping tools capable of supporting all MDPD law enforcement operations. Access to such a fully-functional system, coupled with the timely delivery of location-based intelligence data, would provide immeasurable value to analysts tasked with quickly identifying connections, patterns, and trends in a complex architectural site like MIA.
