About the Program

Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2021

In March 2020, the 18 library branches in Maricopa County Library District fully restricted access to customers to reduce community spread of COVID-19. Librarians cancelled dozens of in-person programs across the District, and community members were suddenly isolated in their homes. Programming staff immediately began to pivot their planning to incorporate virtual events, intending to stay connected to their customers. On March 23, 2020, one week post closure; library staff facilitated the first virtual program for customers.Through trial and error, programming staff identified the best platform, mode, and marketing plan for event delivery. The library community continues to connect through literacy activities, book club events, and exciting new library experiences, all online. The events are embedded in the library website for easy access, which allows staff better control of delivery. Since March 2020, library customers viewed Virtual Programs more than 77,000 times. When it is safe to do so, our libraries will reopen in-person programs to the public. The success of our Virtual Programs guarantees that we will continue to offer this additional option to meet the needs of those unable to visit the library in person.
