About the Program

Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2017

The Lunch @ the Library program was created by OC Public Libraries, in partnership with the California State Library and the Garden Grove School District, to ensure children remain nutritionally healthy during the summer months and to provide a safe place where they not only receive meals, but also opportunities to support and enhance their academic success. The Lunch @ the Library program provides kids access to healthy meals and reduces food insecurity in low-income communities by serving a quality lunch to children and teens during the summer months. Approximately 50% of children in Orange County qualify for the School Free and Reduced Price Lunch program, an indicator of children living in or near poverty. Lunch @ the Library benefits these children and their families by distributing free lunches to anyone 18 years of age and under. In helping to combat food insecurity and child hunger, the Garden Grove Chapman Library Lunch program served over 2,300 lunches in the summer of 2016.
