About the Program

Category: Personnel Management, Employment and Training (Best in Category)

Year: 2014

In 2012, the Augusta County area was fortunate to have an unemployment rate lower than the national average. While encouraging, many residents struggled to find employment and a large percentage of this group had difficulty navigating the new methods of job searching. By partnering with the Rotary Club of Staunton-Augusta County, the Augusta County Library obtained a Rotary District grant and developed the Job Club. Its goal was to create a support group for residents who did not qualify for existing programs. With the assistance of area career specialists, businessmen, and other professionals, the Library hosted four semesters of bi-monthly meetings. Participants attended workshops on a range of topics including resume writing, interviewing skills, appropriate dress, applying for jobs online, and networking skills. By empowering attendees and boosting their self-confidence, many were able to obtain employment. The Job Club demonstrated how county government could join with local clubs, organizations, businesses, and agencies to solve problems and meet a community’s needs at little or no expense to taxpayers. And, by reaching out and networking, the Library improved its visibility and reputation in the Augusta County area.
