About the Program

Category: Personnel Management, Employment and Training (Best in Category)

Year: 2012

In today's fast-paced work environment, employers realize that it is never to early to make plans for future executive employees. Johnson County has created a program to prepare for future executive succession. The purpose of the Succession Planning Program is to attract and retain future managers, and to ensure they receive the training necessary to assume greater responsibility, over time, as the department anticipates a number of retirements in key positions in the near future. Interested staff members must attend a Succession Planning Orientation which will focus on what it takes to be a supervisor. An overview of the program’s curriculum will be presented and the application packet will be distributed. Orientation attendees will not be obligated to apply for the program, but will have the opportunity to submit their application if they are interested. One must attend an orientation session in order to apply for the program. The program consists of 11 classes taught by county staff, as well as a job shadowing opportunity within the department. All 21 of the program’s participants successfully completed the program and within a year, three of the participants received internal promotions.
