Montgomery County’s Division of Parking Management (MCDOT) supports the comprehensive development of the county’s central business districts by supplying a sufficient number of parking spaces to accommodate public demand that is not met by private developers nor served by alternative travel modes. The division recognized the need to visually display the location of its parking assets and undertook the in-house development of an interactive parking map to provide the public with a web based tool for accessing dynamic parking information. Although the methodology of publishing a static map for reference by the public would suffice, the division believed that an interactive map would enrich the user experience. Such an advanced mapping format allows the public to conveniently find parking details including garage and parking meter locations, rates, hours, inventory, payment methods and real-time availability. The development of an interactive mapping platform takes on added significance as the division transitions to a variable pricing system, wherein the mapping application would be the primary disseminator of routine pricing changes.
