About the Program

Category: Children and Youth (Best in Category)

Year: 2011

The Maternal Intervention Project was designed to address the needs of incarcerated mothers and their children at Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center. This includes a 48-hour, attachment-based psychotherapeutic parent education class. In addition, interested mothers have been offered parent/child therapy. Mothers are also offered a parent/child re-entry program following release from jail. This program helps participants maintain their sobriety, practice developmentally-appropriate parenting, manage stress, and find access to other needed programs. So far, 194 women have participated in the parenting program at Glen Helen. After completing the program, participants feel more competent as parents, show more interest in becoming more involved with their children, and are better able to demonstrate the positive parenting skills they have learned.
