On June 4, 2009, Miami-Dade County’s Enterprise Technology and Services Department (ETSD) began the process of installing and running IBM Cognos 8 on System z/Linux. The installation was accomplished within one month and is now the Enterprise Production infrastructure for Miami-Dade County’s business intelligence endeavors. The project fulfilled a business intelligence solution, taking advantage of the vast amounts of information on the County’s mainframe systems in order to produce more effective and efficient decisions. The process began in April 30, 2008, when ETSD signed an Enterprise License agreement with IBM for IBM Cognos BI. The county already had several departmental business intelligence initiatives but was now ready to make business intelligence available to the county as a whole. In order to accomplish this, the county’s business intelligence hardware needed to be able to accommodate numerous applications, users and report writers. It was determined that an infrastructure with a 24-7 solution, enabling the majority of the county’s 29,000 employees access to reports for quick and decisive decision making was needed. IBM Cognos 8 on System z/Linux was the appropriate solution. Installing IBM Cognos 8 on System z/Linux allowed ETSD to open up the County’s Enterprise Infrastructure to a number of County customers and applications. Some of the new projects utilizing business intelligence include Automated Arrest For, Financial Data Warehouse, Parking reports and Billing Work Flow. With the Miami-Dade’s now established enterprise environment, ETSD has the ability to provide the County a centralized, stable and reliable business intelligence atmosphere.
