About the Program

Category: Arts, Culture and Historic Preservation (Best in Category)

Year: 2018

The Pender County Tourism office is located in Burgaw, in a historic renovated jail. In 2016, we gathered groups from across the county to tell their historic ghost stories from Pender's Past. We started with one night, 9 vignettes, and a grand finale in our historic courthouse on the town square. We had 200 tickets available. We posted an announcement on Facebook and within days had more than 73,000 inquiries. We have grown the Ghost Walk to two nights and four shows, which are sell outs. The outcome outweighs the profit because this draws all corners of our county, unifies non profits, two historical societies, and our schools to produce ghostly remembrances of our history. All ticket sales are donated to the historical societies and an arts council. Pender County Tourism funds the cost of production, marketing, and many props. The Ghost Walk spotlights the arts, our history, our diverse culture, and our historic buildings.
