Oakland County, MI has made a significant investment of both time and dollars in geographic information systems (GIS) since the 1990s. We continually look for ways to expand the use of GIS and build on our existing investment. The idea for a GIS self-assessment was born out of this drive to improve. We created the GeoVision Assessment, a simple, Excel-based tool for each County department to evaluate their use of GIS so that we could identify and prioritize future GIS work. Realizing that other government agencies would have this same need, we expanded the scope of GeoVision to include additional business functions. The results from GeoVision can be used to discuss new GIS uses with staff, prioritize next steps, and monitor progress from quarter to quarter. Resources and tools that can be used to improve an organization’s GIS are also included.
