Year: 2012
In October 2010, Broward Countyâs Water and Wastewater Services (WWS) and the Office of Public Communications collaborated in an effort to educate, in general, Broward County residents, and, more specifically, customers of WWS (the Countyâs water/sewer utility), in the safe and proper disposal of items such as cooking oils, grease, cleaning rags/cloths, disinfectant wipes, etc. The result was the creation of the âFROGâ (Fats, Rags, Oil and Grease) Program. Fats, cooking oil and grease poured down drains can build up in pipes, causing backups not only in the home, but overflowing into streets and storm drain systems and can lead to potentially hazardous health threats to residents as well as to waterways, canals and ponds. Since its inception, the FROG program is credited with an estimated 17% reduction in maintenance cleaning hours in WWS's wastewater transmission system. It has been featured on the Broward County website. The Office of Public Communications has assisted WWS in the design and production of a FROG Childrenâs Activity Book, magnets, bill stuffers, flyers and brochures. Presentations via closed circuit television have been made available in Broward Countyâs Government Center, County libraries and at Board of County Commissioners meetings
