The Naranja Branch Library of the Miami-Dade Public Library System began offering the Family Lego Program?on?January 2017 as the result of the successful pilot program held in the summer of 2016.?The program?provided?an opportunity for our community to come together in a safe environment.?It attracted younger reluctant readers,?granted access to materials otherwise inaccessible to children in the area, and?provided?an activity?for younger children waiting for their siblings?while they were?participating?in?our previously awarded tutoring program.?The?Family Lego?served as an introduction to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) programs,?providing?a footing?for future programming ideas.?It also created an exciting opportunity to engage a?portion?of our community,?which?would not normally look forward to,?nor?utilize?library services. It provided a chance for parents and caregivers not only to spend time with their?children, but also to mingle and share their experiences with other parents.?Located in an underserved area, the Naranja Branch Library used the Family LEGO Program to create a safe environment?to?spark knowledge,?creativity,?and curiosity, and have young patrons take a?small step towards a better future and success.?
