Year: 2020
St. Lucie County was at a crossroads five years ago. Gang problems were growing worse in the county seat of Fort Pierce, and economic development was lagging as major employers were passing by the county to relocate and expand in wealthier, safer regions.Community leaders tackled the youth violence issue, in part, by making public bus rides free for youths, giving them access to wholesome after-school activities and part-time jobs. The program was so successful, leaders decided to seek grants making all public transportation free, ensuring the neediest residents could get to work, school and shopping and help break the cycle of poverty and violence.State transportation officials made the project a priority, awarding St. Lucie $556,000 in 2017 to make bus fares free for two years. Transit operators matched the amount and extended hours of operation to accommodate rising demand in underserved neighborhoods.Bus ridership nearly tripled in the first two years of free rides, prompting state and local officials to extend it a third year. Itâs now the countryâs largest fare-free bus network. As a bonus, crime rates have dropped, and economic development officials â who boasted of a âbanner yearâ in 2019 -- tout the commuter program as an important tool in their recruitment toolbox.
