The San Bernardino County Public Defender's SWIMS Program, in collaboration with the Department of Behavioral Health (DBH), addresses the continuing problem of unnecessary hospitalization and incarceration of individuals with psychological distress and mental disorders. The program increases access to outpatient and crisis stabilization services to the indigent population facing criminal charges. This program ensures that community-based resources are available to meet the mental health needs of county residents to assist them reach self-sufficiency and well-being. The goal of the program is to reduce hospitalization and incarceration by making resources and services more accessible to those in need.
