Wake County Environmental Services Administrative Division staff has enhanced fiscal accountability and optimized productivity while minimizing lost time accidents through three key initiatives. First we created the Fiscal and Budget Management group to promote fiscal accountability and fact-based decision making. We work closely with Directors to analyze business options through processes and tools. Using financial models for the Solid Waste enterprise funds, we can identify key issues in advance to allow time to manage outcomes. We use operational and financial analysis to guide management activities and added a second financial model to the Solid Waste Management Enterprise Fund to perform simulations. Second we have enhanced our safety training and accountability program to communicate the roles and responsibilities for each employee in avoiding injury. A safety audit has been completed by each working area of the department. This has raised awareness of the need for safe behaviors. Staff was trained about the safe way to carry out their work tasks. They are aware that their safety is important to our organization. Finally, we are improving service levels without adding cost by using proven management tools. Our strategic planning team is making improvements through Lean and other techniques to reduce wasted effort. We are implementing strategies to solve key problems that slow down productivity. We intend to be a benchmark organization in providing services that surpass the expectations of citizens and other customers.
