The Miami-Dade Public Library’s Enhanced Mobile Library Service (EMLS) is a pilot program developed to serve high-need populations that have difficulty reaching a brick-and-mortar library due to low or impaired mobility, special needs, lack of transportation, etc. This service relies on the use of a cargo van to visit a broad range of community organizations and groups bringing library materials and services as well as programs to meet the needs of the targeted users. This service differs from the Library’s traditional bookmobile service in that, in addition to bringing library materials, it can also provide custom programming developed specially to meet the needs of the client organization/group. During a typical visit unit staff can provide library cards and orient the group about other Library services available to them. Additionally, they can also conduct a variety of other programs including arts and crafts, computer classes, storytimes, etc. A deposit collection of library books can also be provided. Daycare centers and preschools in high-need areas of Miami-Dade County use these books to encourage the development of good reading habits. The types of organizations served by EMLS include senior centers, adult and children daycare centers, preschools, and correction facilities.
