About the Program

Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2017

In conjunction with the County of San Diego’s Diversity and Inclusion Initiative, the San Diego County Library (SDCL) created the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex & Asexual (LGBTQIA) committee during the 2015-2016 Fiscal Year as a response to the unique adversities the LGBTQIA community faces. SDCL assessed its services to address gaps found in public service, through materials, programming and staff training in order to meet its LGBTQIA’s customer needs and provide a safe haven for this community. The Library learned that LGBTQIA individuals can be hesitant to check out physical materials. Therefore, SDCL purchased the majority of our new LGBTQIA materials as e-Books and audio eBooks so that our customers are able to find the resources they need and access them safely and comfortably. Within the first two weeks of having new materials available, over 80% were checked out. SDCL brought in trainers and partnered with a local LGBTQIA center to train staff on how to identify and serve homeless LGBTQIA youth, as well as understand the community’s language and definitions. The Library piloted new programs including “Rainbow Storytime,” and initiated monthly LGBTQIA youth (ages 14-18) programs that encourage socializing in a safe and friendly atmosphere, at five branches.
