Itâs rare that budget reductions and enhanced employee morale go hand and hand, yet the Fairfax County Department of Family Services accomplished just such an experience. Using a proactive analysis of office supply purchasing data, employee feedback, and product research, DFS restructured the purchase of standard office supplies. New employees were often confused about which supplies they needed, so instead of new employees ordering their own supplies - some of which could be costly, not needed, or end up going to waste â DFS developed a unique âWelcome Basketâ packaged in a recycling bin wrapped in cellophane and sealed with a bow and a note from the Departmentâs director. Through streamlining supply purchases and implementing the Welcome Basket, DFS saved almost $100,000 over the past two years. The agency has achieved unique success by reducing costs while increasing employee morale and demonstrating a commitment to valuing employees.
