The people of Elk Creek, a small community on the Kentucky-Virginia border, have long been isolated. Luckily, hard work and diligence from local and state officials in both states, as well as Pike County, Ky., and Buchanan County, Va., officials cut the ceremonial ribbon on Oct. 24 to kickoff a construction projects that will keep the 88 families who live up the hollow from being stranded. The current entrance to the hollow is at about creek level and every time the water got up, the tunnel would fill with water and inhibit residents from being able to exit the hollow. Many Virginia state and local officials attended as well and they iterated the project may have been tough for Pike County to get completed, but it was nothing compared to what the Virginia officials had to endure and overcome.
