The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) developed a web-based Knowledge Management System (KMS), eBudget. Using an intuitive and accessible user-interface design, eBudget provides quick information access, multiple information sharing opportunities, straightforward creation of dashboards and status reports, and easy management of employee tasks. eBudget also serves a variety of administrative functions such as managing leave requests, organizing portfolios, tracking documents, arranging meetings, providing employee reference guides, displaying organizational charts and highlighting staff profiles. Additionally, eBudget is a central portal for all OMB related applications and houses a robust search engine. eBudget is mobile ready and works proficiently across all devices (tablets, smartphones, desktops) and browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox, Safari). For user management/permissions, eBudget is integrated with Montgomery County’s Single-Sign-On (SSO), eliminating the need for additional accounts. OMB implemented the solution with no software/hardware costs by using an open-source Content Management System (CMS) called WordPress and leveraging existing Enterprise Server Virtualization. Since its implementation, eBudget replaced outdated software and databases, reduced paper consumption and significantly improved the productivity, accuracy, and accountability of all staff members. eBudget’s success has spread to other departments, with four additional implementations already in place (Finance, Human Resources, County Executive, Technology Services)…and more on the way!
