About the Program

Category: Health (Best in Category)

Year: 2018

Montgomery County’s Design for Life Property Tax Credit Incentive Program helps residents install basic accessibility design features to make their existing or new single family or townhomes welcoming to persons living with a temporary or permanent disability, accommodate friends or relatives who have a mobility limitation, and, ultimately, to help people age in place at home. Montgomery County incentivizes construction and renovation of homes to meet the needs of all ages and stages of life through universal design or design for life. Property tax incentives and expedited permitting are available to offset the costs of purchasing or making a home visitable or livable by or for persons with physical limitations. Montgomery County’s program is unique as credits offset costs for installing one or more accessibility features, making a home visitable, or making a home livable. The more accessible the home is made, the greater the available tax credit. The program is promoted on bus advertising, through brochures and outreach programs and easy access to information is provided through a dedicated website at designforlifemc.org or https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/design/. A gallery is provided to aid in understanding that Design for Life is beautiful as well as functional and there are creative ways to assist with mobility needs within the home.
