The San Diego County Library’s Dare to Dream Workshop Series, established in 2014, offers access to information resources for young adults and families who may qualify for federal programs aimed at providing immigration assistance. After a successful eight-workshop pilot at the El Cajon Branch drew over 500 attendees, the events were expanded to the Vista Branch in 2015. In collaboration with over thirty partners, including schools and non-profit organizations, San Diego County Library has become a forum where hundreds have received free legal screenings to apply for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans), and other legal benefits. As part of the series, SDCL has also hosted college fairs and financial aid presentations, organized specifically to meet the needs of immigrant students, as well as a job workshop, where millennials could get one-on-one assistance with resumes, job applications, and interview practice. Through this workshop series, SDCL has earned the trust of an underserved community, many of whom were not regular library users. These new customers look to SDCL to explore opportunities for educational and professional advancement. As a result of this work, the library is establishing itself as a safe space and a go-to resource for immigrant residents.
