Clackamas Broadband Express (CBX) is a large, high speed, County wide dark fiber infrastructure for use by public agencies and telecommunication providers. CBX started in 2010 as an American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant under the BTOP program. With a $7.8M grant and an additional $3.3M in matching funds, Clackamas County recently completed the construction phase of the project and has moved into operating much like a self-sustaining, non-profit utility business. The project has been a major success for Clackamas County, our CBX partners and customers, the citizens and businesses of Clackamas County. With over 163 miles of dark fiber connecting much of the County rural and urban centers, and over 160 customer locations and 8 provider partners – CBX is already providing a much needed fiber infrastructure to bring new economic and service opportunities to Clackamas County. And we are growing more every day. CBX has four primary goals: - Provide low cost, high speed broadband connectivity to public agencies providing much needed communications and saving valuable resources. - Provide dark fiber backbone infrastructure, especially in underserved regions, for utilization by local telecommunication providers to expand and enhance broadband services. - Provide fiber infrastructure capabilities to data centric businesses to develop economic opportunities and industries previously not available. - As a self-sufficient program, continue the support and expansion of the fiber plant as well as the economic opportunities for the region. For all 4 goals, CBX has been, and continues to be, a success.
