2010 NACo Achievement Award Winner

Whitfield County, Ga., GA

About the Program

Category: Arts, Culture and Historic Preservation (Best in Category)

Year: 2010

To help its citizens and tourists better understand the role of Whitfield County during the Civil War, local leaders, including ones from the county and city governments, Historic Preservation Commission, Dalton State College and Convention & Visitors Bureau decided to produce a driving tour guided by an audio CD and printed booklet which highlights sites of historical significance. The sites on the tour are marked by special signs, and the booklet and CD package are being sold at the Heritage Center and by the Convention & Visitors Bureau’s visitors center for $15. Developed in consultation with a retired college professor and local history expert, the audio guide directs travelers to the sites while also telling the stories and significance they hold. This program has resulted in an educational experience not only for tourists, but for local residents as well.
