To reduce excessive IT costs that had resulted from a lack of IT leadership and an evolution of IT decentralization, the County Commission, via resolution, formed an Information Technology Steering Committee. It provides guidance, strategic direction, recommendations and priorities to the Mayor, County Commission and all other county elected officials. It is also responsible for oversight of any large IT projects and to review and prioritize all IT capital projects. The IT Steering Committee is the foundation of strong IT governance that ultimately has a significant effect on the overall efficiency of the county. As budgets continue to tighten, the county continues to rely on the IT Steering committee to better align projects to the countyâs goals, look for synergies between departments and elected officials offices, make better decisions, and reduce risks. Within a very short, three year window the IT Steering Committee has achieved much, including hiring a CIO, developing a common service level agreement between the Information Technology Services Department, 34 departments and 19 elected officials, developed new IT governance policies, established a number of specialized IT subâcommittees, and reviewed, evaluated and prioritized over $25 million worth of IT capital projects.
