Year: 2011

The CalFresh Public Awareness program (CPAP) is successfully supporting the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services’ (DPSS) ongoing efforts to aggressively reach our to low-income individuals and families in immediate need of food assistance. The CPAP was implemented to help re-brand the four-decade-old federally-funded Food Stamp program, which in October 2010, officially changed its name to CalFresh. Despite financial struggles, the stigma associated with food stamps has discouraged eligible residents from applying. The CPAP outreach has also been instrumental in spreading the new CalFresh theme: “Better Food for Better Living,” encouraging families to shop at participating grocery stores and farmers’ markets for healthier choices for the entire family. The CPAP has formed a unique partnership, bringing together various sections of DPSS, and is ongoing – with a goal to increase the number of eligible Los Angeles County residents who choose to utilize the CalFresh program.
