Students in the power and transportation classes at Varina High School are making bio-diesel fuel from used cooking oil. The cooking oil comes from the kitchens in the schools and concession stands operated by the Henrico County Division of Recreation and Parks. Students process the cooking oil into fuel, which provides schools with free fuel for its transportation vehicles. The bio-diesel fuel is used to operate lawn care equipment tractors, and school busses, thereby reducing fuel costs for the school system. Additionally, converting the used cooking oil to bio-diesel fuel eliminates the expense of disposal of the oil.
