About the Program

Category: Health (Best in Category)

Year: 2016

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and Mexico. Raising awareness of heart health at a binational level is necessary. It is critical that both nations work collaboratively to address the number one killer of their respective populations. This is the fifth year the County of San Diego, Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) coordinated the “Love Your Heart” campaign, a free blood pressure screening event to address heart disease. The “Love Your Heart” takes place around Valentine’s Day and is perfectly aligned with Live Well San Diego, the County’s vision to improve the health and well-being of residents. The goal is to get people to think about their health and encourage them to have their blood pressure checked every year because “knowing your numbers” is critical for heart health. San Diego shares a border with Mexico to the South. This is the second year partners from Mexico joined the heart health movement. Partners in the six Mexican Border States participated and/or conducted over 13,700 blood pressure checks on February 11, 2016, bringing the total to over 31,000 blood pressure checks in the region in one day attributed to the “Love Your Heart” campaign.
