One of the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners’ (PBC BCC) strategic priority to address substance use and behavior disorders by providing evidence-based prevention, medication-assisted treatment, and recovery support services, as well as recommends was the establishment of a central receiving facility to assist individuals struggling with addition and in danger of losing their lives due to overdoses. The PBC adopted a strategic goal to establish a system of care that was person-centered and recovery-oriented.One of the PBC Opioid Response Plan’s recommendations was to establishment a central receiving facility, such as the JFK Medical Center Addiction Stabilization Center to assist individuals struggling with addition and in danger of losing their lives due to overdoses and address immediate and critical care of individuals experiencing medical emergencies due to opioid or other substance use disorders.Additionally, the Flash Exchange Program provides a connection to substance use disorder treatment, recovery support, as well as other primary health and social services for intravenous drug users. The exchange of used needles and syringes for unused hypodermic syringes not only bridges substance use disorder, but it also helps prevent the transmission of HIV, viral hepatitis, and other blood-borne diseases in our community.
