In harmony with the âPeople Focused. Performance Drivenâ culture of Leon County, the Apalachee Regional Park was uniquely redeveloped in 2013 to promote a specific community need, while remaining good stewards to public dollars. The improvements to the cross county facility located at the park, including a permanent stage, a power source, decorative fencing, landscaping, significant trail widening, an expanded spectator area, and a reconfiguration/relocation of designated parking, has allowed the County the opportunity to attract nationally recognized cross country events. The redevelopment of Apalachee Regional Park created an economic engine by establishing a sporting event destination that has allowed the County to host local, state and national cross country events, like NCAA Regional meet, the FSU Invitational, and the Florida High School Athletic Association State Championship. In an effort to continually protect our environment and create a sustainable community, the Apalachee Regional Park was built upon an unused portion of the Solid Waste Management Facility and opened in 2009. Abutting Lake Lafayette in Leon County, this âLandfill to Park Conversionâ paved the way for the County to create a beautiful area for residents and visitors to enjoy the regions natural beauty, use the parkâs amenities, be healthy in the bountiful space the park offers, and attract nationwide sport events. Not only is the Apalachee Regional Park a stunning asset but has also served as a catalyst for future local economic development.
