In San Diego County, disproportionate rates of COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths were observed among racial/ethnic minority populations and in communities affected by health inequities. Anticipating the importance of trusted health messengers, the Academic Detailing by Zip Code (ADZC) program was designed and implemented in September 2020 to provide current, evidence-based information and local resources to healthcare practices located in underserved communities. Modeled after pharmaceutical detailing, ADZC applied a one-on-one technique of outreach to local providers with the goal of reducing the disproportionate effect of COVID-19. ADZC started detailing healthcare practices within a single zip code, including practices ranging from acupuncture, chiropractic, dental and optometry to behavioral health and home health agencies. By January 23, 2022, ADZC successfully engaged 80% (687/862) of practices in 24 of San Diego County’s zip codes most impacted by COVID-19. Polls of successfully engaged practices demonstrated that 95% of practices reported their knowledge increased, 95% reported behavior change to better protect staff, and 87% changed behavior to improve care given to patients.
