Leon County, Florida’s “9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance” is an annual program that enables our citizens to remember the service of others by volunteering and giving back to the Leon County community. Each year’s edition of the program consists of a remembrance ceremony as well as a service project organized by Leon County in partnership with local private and non-profit organizations. Established in 2011 – the historic 10th anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001 – this program was designed to broaden the meaning of 9/11 in our community. Channeling the powerful sense of honor and patriotism surrounding the events and aftermath of 9/11, each year’s Day of Service and Remembrance brings our community together in service to our friends and neighbors in need. Leon County’s 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance has engendered an assortment of remarkable outcomes. Since the inception of this event in 2011, 976 volunteers have contributed over 4,400 hours of volunteer service to veterans, low-income seniors, disabled individuals, and families of active-duty military personnel in the Leon County community through service projects ranging from creating “garden buckets” for growing vegetables at home to housing rehabilitation for disabled veterans.
