Coconino County, Ariz.
The phrase “Vast and endless beauty and home to many cultures” holds a deep meaning in Coconino County’s mission statement. This phrase is what defines us and makes us unique. As an organization with high regard for cultural diversity and the positive contributions of the many thriving cultures within our county, our nation, and our society, Coconino County leads a variety of initiatives that celebrate diversity. From the annual Diversity Day, and monthly Heritage Lunch & Learns, to book clubs, and professional development academies which target diverse workforce segments, Coconino County’s respect for diversity is shared throughout the organization. Diversity has always been an integral part of Coconino County’s cultural identity and in 2014 we began to formally celebrate diversity with a Diversity & Inclusion Program. The program is designed to raise awareness and promote appreciation of individual differences. Our Diversity & Inclusion Program has been consistently growing and thus strengthening our organization. This program assists Coconino County in building a reputation as an organization that fosters an inclusive work environment where all employees are inspired to contribute their best, and to benefit from their different perspectives, backgrounds and life experiences. Currently this program includes the following initiatives: annual Diversity Day Celebration; Monthly Heritage & Awareness Lunch & Learn Series, a professional development program addressing the needs of our Native American employees and diversity recruitment efforts. Some of our goals for the current and upcoming fiscal years include: the development of a professional development program for our Hispanic employees, the adoption of a Diversity Management Strategic Plan, the update of our Diversity Management Policy and the implementation of a revamped online diversity compliance training.
