    Resilient Economies and Communities Internship

    The National Association of Counties (NACo) in Washington, D.C., announces an opening for a Resilient Economies and Communities Intern position within the Counties Futures Lab.

    The National Association of Counties (NACo) unites America’s 3,069 county governments. Founded in 1935, NACo brings county officials together to advocate with a collective voice on national policy, exchange ideas and build new leadership skills, pursue transformational county solutions, enrich the public’s understanding of county government and exercise exemplary leadership in public service.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    The intern will work with the Resilient Economies and Communities team, within NACo’s Programs and Practices division, for August 2023 through December 2023, with a possible extension based on need. The intern will assist in completing on-going research, writing projects and administrative support for various projects related to upward economic mobility, equitable economic recovery, arts and culture and more.

    In particular, the internship will support NACo’s Building Resilient Economies in Coal Communities (BRECC) community of practice initiative. BRECC is a national program designed to support economic diversification in communities that have been traditionally dependent upon the coal industry or are undergoing closure of a coal power plant. The intern will support national webinars, peer learning convenings and place-based economic planning.

    Qualifications and skills needed for the position are presented below:

    • Interest in supporting counties to develop economic opportunity, especially for under-resourced communities 
    • Ability to write clear and concise reports, blog posts and other products for diverse audiences 
    • Strong data and analytical skills preferred 
    • Strong customer service and communication skills 
    • Experience with Microsoft Office products. Excel and Word skills should be at intermediate level or higher 
    • Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks under short deadlines 
    • Eye for detail, strong organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment 
    • Interest in Public Policy/Administration, Political Science, Regional Planning, Economic/Workforce/Community Development or related field 
    • Background in local government and economic development helpful

    Undergraduate students, recent college graduates and graduate students majoring in rural/urban/regional planning, political science, public administration, public policy, economics, other social sciences or related fields of interest to NACo are encouraged to apply. 

    The above qualifications are typical but applications from students that highlight relevant experience or skills are welcome.  

    Hours/Salary

    Interns typically work at least 3 full days, up to 24-29 hours per week, depending on the Department’s needs and the intern’s availability. This internship pays $17 per hour.
