2018 Large Urban County Caucus Symposium & Fall Board Meeting

Dec. 5, 2018 – Dec. 8, 2018
InterContinental Hotel
901 Bayfront Court, San Diego, CA 92101

The National Association of Counties (NACo) will host its 2018 Large Urban County Caucus (LUCC) Symposium and Fall Board Meeting at the InterContinental Hotel in San Diego County, Calif., on Dec. 5–8. The LUCC Symposium will begin on Dec. 5 and conclude mid-day on Dec. 7, and the Board of Directors meeting will begin mid-day on Dec. 7 and conclude on Dec. 8. NACo Board members are encouraged to attend both events; LUCC Symposium registrants may attend the Board meeting as observers.

The LUCC Symposium is the premier national forum for the exchange of knowledge and solutions that enhance the operations of metropolitan counties, which collectively serve 150 million American residents. All urban county officials are invited to attend the Symposium to connect with peers, thought-leaders and national experts and to participate in timely conversations on the common issues facing their jurisdictions.

The 2018 LUCC Symposium will be centered around the theme of Connecting the Unconnected, NACo President Greg Cox’s initiative. The initiative will explore ways that county governments are connecting our residents in the spirit of building healthy, safe and vibrant communities. At the LUCC Symposium, discussions will focus on how urban counties can improve the ways in which they connect residents to services, opportunities and technology. Further details on symposium programming will be provided in the coming weeks.

In addition to plenary and breakout discussions at the InterContinental Hotel, the Symposium and Board Meeting will feature engaging and informative mobile tours and receptions throughout San Diego County, including those listed below. Please RSVP for mobile tours on the event registration form.

This workshop will take place aboard the 1898 steam ferryboat, Berkeley, housed at the San Diego Maritime Museum, which restores, maintains and houses one of the world’s finest collections of historic vessels. Following a workshop featuring Greg Murphy CEO of the Maritime Alliance, participants are invited to set sail on the San Salvador, a replica of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s ship that arrived at what is present day San Diego Harbor, in 1542.

Friday, December 7, 8:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

The Live Well Center in Escondido serves as a one-stop shop for health and social services for residents in the region.  It is Connecting the Unconnected by allowing residents to walk in and apply for SNAP, TANF and Medicaid while also being connected to services in the community provided by outside providers. Design elements include natural lighting, customer-friendly lobbies, and a collaboration center for public meeting spaces, all of which are geared toward supporting a healthy, safe and thriving community.

2-1-1 Call Center: Keeping San Diego County Residents Connected

Friday, December 7, 8:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

2-1-1 San Diego has established itself as the number San Diegans call when they need help. As a local non-profit operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, 2-1-1 provides trusted access to community, health, social and disaster services. 2-1-1 San Diego connects people to thousands of services, tailored to address an individual’s needs. This centralized call system is the foundation of Supervisor Cox’s presidential initiative:  Connecting the Unconnected.

The 2018 LUCC Symposium and Fall Board Meeting will be held at the brand-new InterContinental San Diego Hotel. The hotel sits on the San Diego Harbor, directly across from the USS Midway and San Diego Maritime museums, just north of the county’s bustling Gaslamp Quarter, and a short drive from the San Diego International Airport.
