Albemarle County, Virginia, settled just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia and known as the home of Thomas Jefferson and the University of Virginia, is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Director of Economic Development. The Albemarle County Director of Economic Development will provide the leadership and action planning to further define and fully implement the goals and objectives of a recently endorsed high level Economic Development Strategic Plan, including identifying necessary resources, retention and expansion of existing businesses including strengthening business climate, site readiness, and redevelopment/revitalization of targeted urban areas, while working within the strong guidance of the County’s Comprehensive Plan.
Minimum requirements for the position includes a Bachelor’s degree with major course work in business, economics, marketing, public administration or related field, with a Master’s degree preferred or experience equivalent to seven years of experience related to economic and business development and marketing. Strong candidates will be a seasoned leader who finds the complexities of local government rewarding and challenging, and have the ability to approach these challenges with a positive entrepreneurial attitude and confident political astuteness while remaining calm under pressure. Must possess a demonstrated track record in existing business retention/expansion, as well as familiarity with an entrepreneurial environment and business startup culture. Most also possess significant supervisory, real estate development and redevelopment experience, and a demonstrated record of facilitating and working in teams.
