In 2016, NACo started working in the area of substance abuse with a focus on opioids. NACo, along with the National League of Cities, launched a joint Task Force to address the opioid epidemic through the collaborative engagement of local leaders. NACo has since expanded its focus on the opioid epidemic to include youth substance use.

Currently, NACo is coordinating additional efforts with the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to explore and understand the most pressing issues for counties around substance use among youth ages 12 to 25. These issues range from tobacco consumption, electronic cigarette use, alcohol use or the use of other substances.

We are asking for your help to gather information about the management of substance uses at the local, county level as it relates to prevention, screening, response, recovery and treatment. The survey takes only 10 minutes to complete. The results will inform NACo's work in this high priority area. The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, May 31.
