Opioid settlement deadline for counties looms April 18

Counties have until April 18 to sign on to participate in the allocation of billions of dollars in settlements from the “big three” pharmacies.

Following 2022’s settlements by CVS, Walgreens and Walmart, a combined $13.1 billion in damages have been awarded to state and local governments. Which local governments depends on which have signed on by the deadline. Shortly after, May 2, states will determine if enough of their local governments to proceed with the settlement.

Counties should inquire with their state association of counties or refer to the national opioid settlement website.

Most (85 percent) of the funds must be used for future opioid abatement. The settlement requires the three pharmacy chains to make changes to their internal systems and policies to prevent the dispensing of prescriptions from “potentially problematic prescribers.”
