A First Timers Guide to the NACo Legislative Conference

There are a lot of people at a NACo conference – typically about 2,300, but you are among friends. County officials and staff from across the nation gather in Washington D.C. to learn and share all things county related.

You are welcome to attend any policy steering committee meetings, which typically occur on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5. Just drop in on any meeting and there will be seats around the outside of the room while committee members sit at tables. These meetings are a great place to learn about and discuss counties’ federal policy priorities – everything from transportation and infrastructure to health, from public safety to public lands management. Feel free to move from one meeting to another until you find a committee that fits your interest.

Other meetings you can attend include Healthy Counties, Resilient Counties, Large Urban County Caucus (for counties of 500,000 or more) and Rural Action Caucus. Or drop by the Next Gen meeting and learn about NACo’s largest committee!

Most all NACo meetings are open to you and we hope you will explore and join in!

NACo’s educational workshops are primarily held on Monday and Tuesday. Dive into hot topics like the opioid epidemic, the Stepping Up initiative to reduce the number of people with mental illnesses in jails, affordable housing, disaster response and recovery, economic development and many more.

Don’t miss the general sessions on Monday, March 6 and Tuesday, March 7 where you’ll hear from top Trump administration officials, members of Congress and other NACo partners.
